Understanding sensitivity around the mouth, nose & eyes

Perioral Dermatitis

UNDERSTANDING PERIORAL DERMATITIS

Perioral dermatitis (POD) is an inflammatory skin condition that most commonly develops around the mouth, nose and sometimes the eyes.

Although it can resemble acne or rosacea, it is a distinct condition that requires a different treatment approach.

How it can present:

/ Redness around the mouth, nose or eyes
/ Small red bumps or pustules
/ Burning or stinging
/ Dryness and flaking
/ Tight, uncomfortable skin

What influences Perioral Dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis can be influenced by a number of factors, including:

/ Impaired skin barrier
/ Overuse of active skincare ingredients
/ Topical corticosteroids
/ Hormonal changes
/ Certain cosmetics or toothpaste
/ Stress or environment
/ Changes to the skin microbiome

How I approach treatment?

Perioral dermatitis is one of the clearest examples of why less is often more.

Rather than aggressively treating the visible bumps, the priority is calming inflammation, restoring the skin barrier and identifying potential triggers that may be perpetuating the condition.

Many clients arrive having tried multiple active ingredients in an attempt to "clear" the rash, only to find it worsening over time. Treatment often begins by simplifying the routine, identifying triggers, supporting barrier function and allowing the skin the opportunity to recover.

Where appropriate, I may also recommend working alongside your GP or dermatologist if prescription treatment is indicated.
