UNDERSTANDING IRRITATION CAUSED BY OVERGROWTH OF MALASSEZIA

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

What is Seborrhoeic Dermatitis?

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition associated with an overgrowth of naturally occurring yeast Malassezia alongside changes in the skin barrier and immune response. It most commonly affects areas rich in sebaceous glands, including the face, scalp and around the nose.

How it can present:

/ Redness
/ Flaking
/ Greasy scales
/ Itching
/ Irritated skin around the nose, eyebrows or scalp

What influences Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

/ Malassezia yeast
/ Excess oil production
/ Stress
/ Changes in immunity
/ Climate
/ Barrier dysfunction

How I approach treatment?

Successful management often requires addressing both inflammation and the underlying yeast overgrowth while supporting the skin barrier.

Rather than simply reducing visible flaking, treatment focuses on calming irritation, restoring skin function and selecting skincare that doesn't further disrupt the barrier and addresses the malassezia yeast.

Where appropriate, collaboration with your GP may also be recommended.
